Back to KK on a bus

Back to KK on a bus

Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, Asia Today was a bit of a wasted day due to travelling. I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on a flight back to KK from Sandakan, so I decided to take a bus. I got up and checked out of my hostel earlier than I was planning, but I was just happy to get out of there. Neither Sandakan nor my hostel impressed me, so I wasn’t going to stick around longer than I…

Orang Utans at Sepilok

Orang Utans at Sepilok

Sandakan, Malaysia, Asia I’m getting a little tired of these ridiculously early wake up calls, but today it was well worth it. I woke up at 4:30am and got in a cab at 5am to head over to Terminal 1 at KKIA. I had checked the website and unfortunately my AirAsia flight wasn’t flying out of T2 which was only a five minute walk away. It was leaving from T1 which was a 30RM ($10) taxi ride away. Luckily I…

Day in KK

Day in KK

Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, Asia I met a few really nice English people at Borneo BeacHouse Backpackers this morning, and ended up spending the day with them. A couple (Rob and Jen) and a solo traveler (Julie) were nice enough to invite me to go for a walk around KK with them, so I wasn’t about to pass up that invitation. We caught the bus into town, which was an experience in itself. It’s not so much a bus, as a…

Jakarta to Borneo

Jakarta to Borneo

Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, Asia I got up this morning after a very comfortable night at Hunny Hostel. I had a four bed dorm to myself, and it had A/C, so I was very happy. I wasn’t too excited about seeing anything else in Jakarta, but I forced myself out to see what was around. I had a walk up the main street until I got to China Town and had a walk around there checking out the markets and whatnot….

Bye Ana! Getting back to KL to fly to Bali

Bye Ana! Getting back to KL to fly to Bali

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Asia I got up this morning and had to say bye to Ana. It was a sad time, but I think I’ll have to get used to this while travelling. She is heading off into a fairly sketchy part of Thailand to get up north to see a friend. I’ll feel better once I’ve heard that she made it up there without a problem. I headed out in Kota Bharu to try and find an internet cafe…

Island living is done for now…

Island living is done for now…

Kota Bharu, Malaysia, Asia Today was a pretty relaxed day. Ana and I checked out of the hostel and got our 20RM key deposit back, so at least we could afford to eat lunch on the island. We went back to Yellow Chairs where we ate the night before and grabbed a bite to eat with Ro (Joe already left for Thailand this morning). After lunch we just got an umbrella on the beach and chilled for a couple hours….

Snorkelling in the Perhentians

Snorkelling in the Perhentians

Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia, Asia I have had an absolutely incredible day today. A group of us met for breakfast at Amelia’s on Coral Beach and we paid for our snorkeling trip through them. Since we had eight people we got our own boat for the day, so that was pretty cool. Not surprisingly the gear that we were given from the company was all pretty poor, but I shouldn’t have expected much more for a trip that cost $11…

Going to the islands

Going to the islands

Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia, Asia Today was another lengthy day of travelling, but I ended up in one of the most beautiful places in the world, so it wasn’t so bad I guess. Ana and I left Kota Bharu at about 11am and grabbed a bus to Kuala Besut where we could get a ferry to the islands. The bus ride was a pretty simple hour and fifteen minutes with just a lot of small villages on the way. It…

Long bus day…

Long bus day…

Kota Bharu, Malaysia, Asia Today was a very long day of travelling by bus. Ana and I left the hostel at 10am to catch our bus over to Kuala Terengganu at 10:30am. The bus wasn’t quite as nice as the one I took from Singapore, but it was still pretty decent. Big seats, just not as clean and such a weird “schedule”. We were told that we should get to Kuala Terengganu at about 5pm, which would have been perfect…

Batu Caves and KL Tower

Batu Caves and KL Tower

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Asia I actually woke up this morning at 8am and was well prepared for a full day of sight seeing. And even more amazingly, everyone else was up and ready to go by 10am. Seven of us headed out to the Batu Caves by grabbing a local bus in town. The group was me, Jesse, Ana (Canadian), Louise and Melissa (Holland) and Neils and Natascha (Germany). We got to the caves and had a walk up to…
