Excellent day at Iguazu Falls!

Foz de Iguacu, Brazil, South America

I had an awesome day at Iguazu Falls today!! The day started out with a relatively late rise at the hotel after a great night’s sleep. I went down to have breakfast at the hostel and didn’t expect it to be much, but it was actually a pretty decent buffet with meats, cheeses, fruits, breads, and drinks. I enjoyed my breakfast and then got myself sorted to go out to see the falls from the Brazilian side.

I took a walk down from my hostel to the Terminal Urbano bus station and hopped on a local bus 120 to Iguazu Falls. I was very impressed that it only cost 2.90 Reals ($1), and in about 40 minutes I was at the entrance. This was a much nicer looking entrance than the Argentinian side, and luckily for me, there was no line at all. Good start! I got my ticket for 52 Reals ($20), which was cheaper than the Argentinian side, another point for Brazil! I then got in the very short line for the bus to bring me down to the falls, and it was a lot nicer than the little train on the Argentinian side. These were all great things, that were only punctuated by the amazing view I got when I got off the bus.

I got off at the main entrance and the first view you see is an unbelievable panorama of the falls on the Argentinian side. This view already trumped everything that I saw two days ago in Puerto Iguazu, and it was actually an enjoyable experience over here in Brazil. There were very few people. No one was pushing and shoving. And it was possible to just sit back and enjoy the view and take in this natural wonder in all its glory.

I walked down the path to the other viewpoints, and there were about six of them along the way to the Devil’s Throat. The views from this side of the falls were really spectacular, and much better than the ones from the Argentinian side, in my opinion.

At the end of the path you get to the Devil’s Throat and there is a walkway built out into the middle of the falls. Based on what I was told about the Brazilian side just being a panoramic view, I didn’t expect this at all. It was cool to be able to walk out there and get wet by being below one of the falls, and standing on top of another one. It was amazing. My time here finished at the top of a viewing platform that gave a view that was just awesome.

From there I caught the bus back to the main entrance, and about five minutes later I got on the 120 bus back into the center of Foz do Iguazu. It couldn’t have been an easier or more enjoyable experience for me today, and I really wasn’t expecting it to be this good. The experience I had on the other side of the falls really made me lower my expectations, but it all worked out for the best because the falls today totally blew me away. I’m now happy to cross Iguazu Falls off my list of 100 things to see before I die, and that makes it 64 down, 36 to go!

I got back into town and went to the mall nearby my hostel to get something to eat. There is a steakhouse there called Madero and they claim to have the best burger in the world. I figured I should test out this claim, and they weren’t far off. It was an excellent burger, with great fries, and was the perfect ending to a great day. I’ve booked my bus ticket for tomorrow to go to Florianopolis, and it doesn’t leave until 7:15pm, so I have all day to do something around here. Not sure what that’s going to be yet…
