Off to Port Elizabeth

Off to Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Africa Bishop’s Inn We had breakfast at Ashanti this morning for the last time and checked out. We got an Uber to the airport, and it was A LOT cheaper than a taxi had been, only 160r instead of the taxi which was 250r. While we were waiting at the airport I got a call from our hotel in Port Elizabeth telling us they didn’t have room for us tonight, but to go there anyway to…

Camp’s Bay and Clifton

Camp’s Bay and Clifton

Cape Town, South Africa, Africa Ashanti Lodge Gardens Today was our last full day in Cape Town, and it was another good day. We had breakfast at the guesthouse and then walked back to Green Market Square for another walking tour. Just by chance, we got Ken as a tour guide again, but this time for an Historical walking tour. It was really interesting to hear about how Cape Town came to be the big city it is, and the…

Table Mountain and Robben Island

Table Mountain and Robben Island

Cape Town, South Africa, Africa Ashanti Lodge Gardens This morning we had breakfast at Ashanti and then got a taxi to the Table Mountain lower cable station. Even though we had bought tickets online about two months ago, we had to wait in a ridiculous line for 1.25 hours. When we first arrived, we thought the line was just for people buying tickets, and I even laughed at all the people who had to stand there and wait. Then I…

First Day in Cape Town

First Day in Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa, Africa Ashanti Lodge Gardens We had a great night’s sleep after such an exhausting day of travelling, and our day started with a decent breakfast at the hostel. It is a buffet style breakfast in the hostel that’s not bad considering it’s included in the room rate. We were asking some questions of the people at reception at the hostel, but they were surprisingly unhelpful. We asked how safe it was to walk to a walking…

Heading to South Africa

Heading to South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa, Africa Ashanti Lodge Gardens We started our trip with a ridiculous travel day. We got up at 3:30am to get a taxi at 4am, to get to the airport by 4:30am, for a 6am flight to Amsterdam. The initial flight was fine, but the second flight from Amsterdam to Cape Town was beautiful. It was a brand new Boeing 787 and the amenities onboard were great. Each seat had a big touch screen on the back…

Blue Lagoon and heading home

Blue Lagoon and heading home

Reykjavik, Iceland, Europe We had a nice final night in Iceland and got up this morning to pack up our bags. We found a local bakery and had some awesome cinnamon rolls for breakfast. We returned the car and then walked back up to the apartment to pick up the bags. We got picked up by a car service called Back to Iceland. It was by far the cheapest we could find that would take us from the city center…

Full day in Reykjavic

Full day in Reykjavic

Reykjavik, Iceland, Europe We got up this morning and went for a small bite to eat We went up the church tower at the top of the hill but unfortunately the weather was awful today. We went up to the top, but the view wasn’t great due to all the rain and fog. We went down and found a hostel called Kex that was recommended for us to get something to eat. We had lunch there and it was good,…

Lava falls, Ponies, back to the city

Lava falls, Ponies, back to the city

Reykjavik, Iceland, Europe Today was our last day of driving, and it was great. We had breakfast at Hotel Tindastoll before we left, and then headed out in search of a lighthouse. Melissa has never been to a lighthouse before, and we could see on our map that there are a couple here, but it turns out they are only on private roads and we couldn’t actually get to them. On our way back to Route 1 we stopped by…

Hiking a volcano and waterfalls

Hiking a volcano and waterfalls

Saudarkrokur, Iceland, Europe We got up this morning and went out to check out some of the sites near Lake Myvatn. The first place we checked out was called Dimmuborgir, which was right across the street from our cabin. It is this strange rock garden kind of place with a couple of caves. The whole thing was covered in snow, so some of the walking paths were closed. We walked through for a little while and then headed out to…

Amazing scenery and Nothern Lights!

Amazing scenery and Nothern Lights!

Lake Myvatn, Iceland, Europe We saw some of the most beautiful scenery of our trip so far today. We left the Gerdi Guesthouse early this morning and headed east. We made a stop in Hofn to look at the view (which wasn’t spectacular), and went to a grocery store to pick up more snacks for the drive. We managed to find some sandwiches that were already made as well, which made for a great picnic on some rocks. We stayed…
