Lava falls, Ponies, back to the city

Lava falls, Ponies, back to the city

Reykjavik, Iceland, Europe

Today was our last day of driving, and it was great. We had breakfast at Hotel Tindastoll before we left, and then headed out in search of a lighthouse. Melissa has never been to a lighthouse before, and we could see on our map that there are a couple here, but it turns out they are only on private roads and we couldn’t actually get to them. On our way back to Route 1 we stopped by some old Icelandic houses that are built into the earth, and checked them out for a while. It was freakin freezing outside though, so we only lasted about 15 minutes before we had to get back in the car and get moving.

Our first stop on the way to Reykjavik was Grabrok, a group of three volcanic craters. The largest one has a wooden walking path built onto it, so we went for a walk up that, and got a very cool view. You could see where the volcano had erupted and spewed lava. The lava flow looked like a river of black rock, and you can see how far it flowed, and it just killed everything in its path.

We moved on from the craters to see some lava falls. This was one of the coolest things I’ve seen in Iceland so far. These are waterfalls that seem to just be coming out from the ground. The water is flowing above the earth, but below the lava flows. It is very cool looking. We went on a couple of the walking trails around the falls and checked it all out, From the falls we drove to the largest thermal spring in Europe, which sounds cool, but it was very boring. It’s just a couple of hot springs, which smell absolutely terrible, and they pipe out the heat to use as energy all over the island. It’s very interesting technology, but it’s not the most impressive thing to look at. It worked out alright though, because on our way back to the main road, we came across a field full of Icelandic ponies, and we were able to stop and pet them. They must be used to tourists here, because the ponies came right over to us and were very friendly.

We left the ponies behind and drove straight through to Reykjavik. We found our apartment that we are staying in for the next few nights, and it’s really nice. It’s called Rey Apartments, and it’s in a perfect location in the center of the city. We dropped off our bags at the apartment and then returned the car to the Sixt office. Melissa had found a restaurant near the Sixt office that we wanted to go to dinner at, but unfortunately they were full for the night. The girl who worked there recommended a restaurant just down the road called Food and Drink, and it was excellent! I had a lamb dinner and Melissa had a fish stew. Both of us were blown away with our dinners and couldn’t have been happier walking back to our apartment.

We are back in the apartment now and we’re trying to finish off our alcohol that we bought at the beginning of the trip, and we’re watching a movie. It’s nice to know that tomorrow we don’t have to hit the road again, but I’m sure we’ll stay busy anyway.
