Camp’s Bay and Clifton

Camp’s Bay and Clifton

Cape Town, South Africa, Africa
Ashanti Lodge Gardens

Today was our last full day in Cape Town, and it was another good day. We had breakfast at the guesthouse and then walked back to Green Market Square for another walking tour. Just by chance, we got Ken as a tour guide again, but this time for an Historical walking tour. It was really interesting to hear about how Cape Town came to be the big city it is, and the political history here.

After the tour finished we took a taxi to Camps Bay. This is an area on the other side of the city where you have to drive through the mountains to get there, and then you end up at a beautiful beach. Unfortunately, the weather today wasn’t the best, but it wasn’t raining, so it was okay. I can only imagine how nice it would be to be on this beach when it’s sunny out, but we can’t have everything.

We had lunch at Umi, this Japanese restaurant with a great view over the beach. We went far a walk down Camp’s Bay Beach and then walked up the road to Clifton Beach. Clifton wasn’t exactly what we expected, but was okay. We thought it was going to be similar to Camp’s Bay Beach where there is a promenade next to the beach. Instead it is three small beaches that are surrounded by private residences, so it felt a bit strange sitting on the beach. We still sat there for a little while just relaxing and watching the waves, and then decided to move on.

We were hoping to get a taxi back from Clifton to the city center, but because it isn’t a touristy area, there were no taxis. We ended up having to walk back to Camp’s Bay to get a taxi, and had him bring us to the National Museum. We got there at about 4:30pm, and they were already closed, so that was a bit of a bummer.

We went back to Ashanti, got changed, and got an Uber to Mama Africa on Long Street. This is a restaurant that was recommended to us by a taxi driver a few nights ago so we thought we would give it a shot. It was a very cool restaurant with stuff all over the walls and a very funky bar. We started out with a meat platter which consisted of kudu, ostrich, and springbok. All were excellent. For the main course I had the lamb curry, which was just okay, but the atmosphere at the restaurant was awesome. There was a live band which was really good, and we even bought their CD to listen to for when we are driving around the country. They were playing mostly their own traditional African music, but they also played some covers and they were very entertaining. We finished off with some Malva cake for dessert which was good, but not great.

Overall, it was a really fun night, and a good way to top off our time in Cape Town. This is has been an unbelievable city and tomorrow we are heading east. I can’t wait to see what the rest of South Africa has in store for us!!
