Heading back to Townsville

Heading back to Townsville

Townsville, Australia, Australia Today was another slow day. I woke up at the hostel at about 6:30am to make sure that I could get into the bathroom before the other five roommates woke up and took over. I was out of the hostel by 7:30am and in the lobby waiting for the local bus to come and bring me to the ferry terminal. Lisa and I hopped on the 10am ferry and headed back over to Townsville. This time we…

Another relaxing day on Magnetic Island

Another relaxing day on Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island, Australia, Australia Today was a very relaxed day at the hostel. We woke up to have a Bushtucker’s Breakfast at 8:30am, followed by a guided tour through the wildlife sanctuary. The breakfast was excellent! It had everything you would want from pancakes and French toast to bacon and lamb chops. It was brilliant. We continued on to the tour where we got to hold a python, a few types of lizards, a crocodile and a cockatoo. We also…

First day on Maggie Island

First day on Maggie Island

Magnetic Island, Australia, Australia Today was a very nice relaxing day, after we got out of Civic Guest House. We got out of that place as quickly as humanly possible! We got into the car and headed over to Billabong Sanctuary which is just south of Townsville. It is a really nice wildlife park that I went to with my mom about 10 years ago. We drove the 10 miles down there only to find out that it was closed…

Townsville, Australia, Australia Today was not a good day, mostly. I didn’t get a wink of sleep last night because it was about 32*C(90*F) in my room last night and even with the door open and the fan open, we couldn’t seem to get a breeze in there. I was pretty miserable when I packed up my things and checked out of the hostel, which is too bad because up until the A/C problem, I was enjoying my stay at…

Relaxing in Port Douglas

Relaxing in Port Douglas

Port Douglas, Australia, Australia Today was a very relaxing day. After all the excitement from the full day of diving, I wanted to have a slow day to recover. I rented a bike and went for a ride down to the south end of Four Mile Beach. The bike rental guy said that it would be best to ride down the road to the south end of the beach and then ride up Four Mile Beach on the sand. Unfortunately,…

Diving the Great Barrier Reef

Diving the Great Barrier Reef

Port Douglas, Australia, Australia I had the most amazing day today! I got to fulfill a life dream and SCUBA dive in the Great Barrier Reef! I was picked up by Aristocat diving company at 8:30am, boarded the ship and we were off by 9am. There were about 45 passengers on board, when their full capacity is 90, so we had plenty of space to move around on the boat and in the water. It took about an hour to…

Out of the jungle and to the beach

Out of the jungle and to the beach

Port Douglas, Australia, Australia This morning I woke up very early, actually that’s a lie. Saying that I woke up implies that I did indeed sleep at one point and that’s not true. It rained ferociously again last night, and the animals in the forest didn’t sound too happy about it either. So I was STILL up very early this morning andwas packed up and ready to go by 8am. I met Lisa for breakfast at the restaurant at the…

A very hectic day!

A very hectic day!

Cape Tribulation, Australia, Australia Last night I had one of the best and worst nights ever. I went back to my room and relaxed for a bit, wrote my blog and then decided to get some sleep around 10pm. I lay in my bed and just listened to the rain crash down on the roof of my “building” and heard some frogs, crickets, and various other rain forest critters making noise. It was amazing to hear so many different things…

Cape Tribulation, Australia, Australia Today we left Calypso Backpackers in Cairns to head up to Cape Tribulation. We picked up our rental car from Hertz and were on the road by 10am. Unfortunately, we had to hit the road in our very ugly lime green Hyundai Getz. It’s certainly not the nicest of vehicles, but it’ll get us around, and it has AC! We stopped at a place called Mossman Gorge which was recommended to us by the Calypso workers….

Rafting on the Tully

Rafting on the Tully

Tully, Australia, Australia Last night we went out for dinner at a Mexican restaurant called the Green Ant Cantina. It was recommended in a travel guide and I can see why. I had the best fajitas I have ever had at this restaurant! And I’ve had my fair share of fajitas. It was in a strange location, closer to a neighborhood setting than in the city, but the food really was amazing. We came back to the hostel straight after…
