Last day in Santiago before heading south

Santiago, Chile, South America

I had a good last day in Santiago today. It started with a pretty quiet morning at the hostel. They actually brought me breakfast in my room, which I have never had before. It wasn’t much. Just a ham and cheese sandwich on typical Chilean bread, with juice, a banana, and a breakfast bar. I’m very impressed with this hostel though. It’s been really nice, and the owner Mario has been awesome.

I checked out around 11am and left my bags there for the day. I went back to the mall that I had been at with Melissa to check out a camera shop. I’ve been having an issue with the sensor on my camera being dirty, so I’m getting some black spots in my pictures. It’s really annoying, but the sensor is not an easy thing to clean, so I need a special tool. Unfortunately I can’t find this sensor cleaner anywhere in South America.

I looked around the mall to do a little shopping, but never found anything I liked, and then at 2pm I headed toward the Bellas Artes museum, where the free walking tour starts from. I’m glad I always leave really early for things like this because there was a problem with the subway today. I don’t know if they’re doing construction or whatever, but I was told that I had to get off the red line about six stops earlier than I wanted to. This meant that I had to switch to the yellow line for one stop, and then get the green line for four stops. And of course it was crazy busy because everyone else was having the same problem I had. It was annoying, but I made it there by 3:02pm, and the tour actually started at 3:15pm, so it was fine.

I got there and was greeted by my friend Andrea who I met on Easter Island. It was really nice to see her again, because I thought she had already gone back to Brazil. We had a nice three hour tour of Santiago with Tours for Tips, but they mainly showed us the same things I had already seen on the bike tour with Melissa. It was still a nice day to walk around the city, so it wasn’t a waste.

The tour finished at a bar in the center and I had to leave the group there before I even got my free drink. I had to get the metros back to my hostel so I could pick up my bag and then head to the bus terminal. It was tough to get a taxi because it is Friday night in the big city, and the metros aren’t working, but I managed to find one. The bus terminal was packed, and everyone was crowded around a few TV’s to watch Chile play football against Venezuela. I saw Chile score for the second time just seconds before half time to go up 2-0, and the whole bus terminal exploded with excitement. Then I got on the bus to settle in for my 12 hour ride to Puerto Montt. I have a really nice Cruz del Sur bus, and a nice big seat with no seat next to me, so I can get really comfortable. I like these buses here.
