Kotor is beautiful!

Kotor, Montenegro, Europe

I woke up after a few hours of on and off sleep and felt a little bit better. I’ve decided that I’m definitely going to stay tonight here, and might also stay tomorrow night too. I am not actually staying in Kotor, I’m in another little village called Prcanj. It is only 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) from the old city of Kotor. I walked to the old city this morning so I could check out the view from the other side of the bay. There’s not a whole lot in between Prcanj. A couple of churches, a few shops, but mainly just residences.

I got to the old city around 1pm and was starving. I realized I hadn’t eaten anything since lunch yesterday. All that travelling really had my body confused. I sat down at one of the restaurants in the old city and had a pizza and coke. That seemed to give me some much needed energy. I walked around the city for a little while and then started on my hike up to the fortress.

There’s a big fortress built into the cliffs overlooking the city. It must have been some undertaking to build this from over a thousand years ago. It was a heck of a hike up there though. After 1350 stairs I reached the top of the fortress and was exhausted, and sweaty. The sun never completely broke through today, but that was probably a savior because it was hot enough anyway on that climb. I hung around at the top for a good hour just checking out the different views from all over. It was a lot bigger than it looked from down below. You couldn’t see all the different levels and rooms from below, but it gave a lot of places to search when you finally got there.

On my way down I met a really nice Polish couple who are driving around Europe to sight see. I’m not going to try to write their names because I would absolutely butcher them, but they were really friendly. We chatted all the way down the mountain and exchanged some travel stories. I left them and had a drink in the main square of the old city and just people watched for a while. It’s a fun thing to do in such a touristy place. You never know what you’re going to see.

I walked part of the way back to my hostel, but when it started to spit with rain I jumped on a local bus back to Prcanj. The only problem with being so far from the town center is that there really isn’t much to do at night. I guess in town there are some clubs, but that’s not really my scene either. I guess it’s good to have a nice quiet place and I’ll be guaranteed to get a good night’s sleep. After last night’s debacle, I’m pretty excited about it!
