Final day in Cartagena; Bus to Medellin

Cartagena, Colombia, South America

I chilled in Cartagena today with my new Aussie friend Kim. We led the hostel to check out the castle on the hill just outside of the old town. The mistake that we made was that we didn’t start heading to the castillo until 11am, so it was hot as hell outside. We first stopped at the post office so I could ship my guayabera back to the United States. I’m assuming I won’t be going to any other Colombian weddings on the beach in the next short while, so I figure it’s best that I don’t carry it around for another seven months.

The castle wasn’t all that impressive, but it was built more as a fortress than as a castle for royalty to live in. It looks like it served its purpose well, because it was a tough looking building but nothing too nice to see inside. The good thing was that it is very high, and gives a great view of Cartagena. You can see the old town on one side and the new part of the city on the other side. It was so hot and humid that we could only stand walking around the castle for about 45 minutes and then we had to get out of there.

We went to a local mall and had a cold drink at the Juan Valdez Cafe and relaxed in the air conditioning for a while. It felt so good to be out of the heat for a while. We headed into town for a little shopping and then went back to the hostel for a dip in the pool. I just cannot deal with this heat. I didn’t get up to much else today but had a look at what I can do when I get to Medellin.

I got a taxi from the hostel to the Terminal Del Transporte to catch my bus and got there with about 45 minutes to spare. I’m always happy to be early rather than late. The bus left right on time and it’s a nice big coach bus with air conditioning. If anything, it’s a little too cold. I’m on the bus now on the way to Medellin and it’s supposed to be a 13 hour trip in total. I can’t see anything just yet, but I’m hoping that in the morning I’ll get some good views of the mountains around Medellin. It’s supposed to be beautiful.
