Drive up to Kings Canyon

Drive up to Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon, Australia, Australia

I was planning on getting an early start today, but I couldn’t be bothered getting out of bed so I finally hit the road at 8:45am. It was a two hour drive south to Erldunda where I filled up on gas, and then I headed west on Lasseter Highway for about an hour. I had envisioned there being more things to stop and see on the way, but there really was nothing at all, so I was making really good time. I stopped to take a few pictures of the surroundings, but that didn’t take too much time.

I headed north towards Kings Canyon and it was about an hour and a half up to Kings Canyon Resort where I am staying tonight. There were some burn offs on the side of the read and it was the first time I’d ever seen that. I’d heard about controlled fires before, but this was the first I’d witnessed. It was cool to see what the land looked like before the burn off and after.

I continued up to the Resort and checked into my hostel room and was very impressed with the accommodation. It is a four person room with four normal beds, not bunks. We also have a TV and refrigerator, which are very nice to have. Two guys had already checked in and chosen beds so I took the only double bed that was available, rather than another twin bed. I was pretty happy about that. I finally met the other guys in the room, Angus (Aussie), Min (South Korean), and Gerard (Germany).

I decided that I would do Kings Canyon tomorrow so I just hung out at the resort for the rest of the day. I went out to the sunset viewing platform to try and catch a glimmer of what I saw last night in Alice Springs, however the weather was now quite overcast and there wasn’t much of a sunset at all. It pretty much just got dark and that was it. I spent the rest of the day/night hanging out in the room with the guys, and that was it. I went over to the cafe & bar, but because we are in the middle of nowhere, they are charging unbelievably ridiculous prices for everything, so I wasn’t going to spend a fortune in there.

I’m going to bed early tonight and I’ll wake up in the morning to see if it’s still overcast. If it’s clear I’m going to head over to the canyon for sunrise, but I have a feeling it’s still going to be overcast or possibly even raining. Yes, I’m in the desert and it’s going to rain for the next few days. Lucky me!
