Day at the Canyon…in the rain

Kings Canyon, Australia, Australia

I woke up this morning to see that the sky was still completely cloud covered, so I immediately went back to sleep. Unfortunately, Min and Gerard decided to leave at 6:30am and were pretty noisy packing up, so I was awake from that time anyway. I hung out in the room until about 10am hoping that the rain would go off, but it never did. I decided to head over to the canyon anyway and see what it was like in the rain anyway.

I started on the canyon rim walk at 10:30am and the rain was coming down steadier than I’d seen all morning. Luckily, when I got to the top of the rim it settled down and the rain held off for most of the day. It was a nice 2.5 hour walk up to the top and around the rim of the canyon with some awesome views. I can only imagine what it would be like if the sun was shining and there were clear skies. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to imagine it, because the sun never broke through the clouds.

I met a couple (Debbie and Mark) who had been on the same flight as me from Melbourne and are doing basically the same itinerary as I am, so I walked the second half of the rim walk with them. It was nice because Debbie was more than willing to take some pictures of me on the way, so it’s nice to get some of those without having to set up the tripod.

Anyway, I’m back at the hostel now and Angus and I are the only ones left in the room. The rain has continued on so I didn’t get up to anything else. We just hung out in the room and watched some TV. I’ll head down to Yulara tomorrow so I can get up and see Ayers Rock the next day. Hopefully the weather will clear up a bit for when I get down there, but I’m not going to hold my breath.
