First Big Safari Day

First Big Safari Day

Makana, South Africa, Africa Pumba Private Game Reserve We woke up this morning at 6:30am to go on our first morning safari, and I was so excited that I didn’t care how early it was. We met our ranger Justin, and he took us out in the Landrover at 7am with 4 other people. The first thing we saw was a leopard just walking down the road that we were driving on, so of course we stopped. Justin said that…

Going on a safari

Going on a safari

Makana, South Africa, Africa Pumba Private Game Reserve We woke up today at the lovely Bishops Inn to find that our toilet was absolutely covered in ants. I’ve been in some really nasty places around the world, but this is the worst bug problem I’ve ever seen in an accommodation I was staying in. When we complained to the girl at the front desk, she was very nonchalant when she responded that they have an ant problem, and the ants…

Off to Port Elizabeth

Off to Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Africa Bishop’s Inn We had breakfast at Ashanti this morning for the last time and checked out. We got an Uber to the airport, and it was A LOT cheaper than a taxi had been, only 160r instead of the taxi which was 250r. While we were waiting at the airport I got a call from our hotel in Port Elizabeth telling us they didn’t have room for us tonight, but to go there anyway to…

Camp’s Bay and Clifton

Camp’s Bay and Clifton

Cape Town, South Africa, Africa Ashanti Lodge Gardens Today was our last full day in Cape Town, and it was another good day. We had breakfast at the guesthouse and then walked back to Green Market Square for another walking tour. Just by chance, we got Ken as a tour guide again, but this time for an Historical walking tour. It was really interesting to hear about how Cape Town came to be the big city it is, and the…

Table Mountain and Robben Island

Table Mountain and Robben Island

Cape Town, South Africa, Africa Ashanti Lodge Gardens This morning we had breakfast at Ashanti and then got a taxi to the Table Mountain lower cable station. Even though we had bought tickets online about two months ago, we had to wait in a ridiculous line for 1.25 hours. When we first arrived, we thought the line was just for people buying tickets, and I even laughed at all the people who had to stand there and wait. Then I…

First Day in Cape Town

First Day in Cape Town

Cape Town, South Africa, Africa Ashanti Lodge Gardens We had a great night’s sleep after such an exhausting day of travelling, and our day started with a decent breakfast at the hostel. It is a buffet style breakfast in the hostel that’s not bad considering it’s included in the room rate. We were asking some questions of the people at reception at the hostel, but they were surprisingly unhelpful. We asked how safe it was to walk to a walking…

Heading to South Africa

Heading to South Africa

Cape Town, South Africa, Africa Ashanti Lodge Gardens We started our trip with a ridiculous travel day. We got up at 3:30am to get a taxi at 4am, to get to the airport by 4:30am, for a 6am flight to Amsterdam. The initial flight was fine, but the second flight from Amsterdam to Cape Town was beautiful. It was a brand new Boeing 787 and the amenities onboard were great. Each seat had a big touch screen on the back…

Last full day in Egypt :-(

Last full day in Egypt :-(

Cairo, Egypt, Africa Today started out horribly when the train worker knocked on our door at 7:04am. First of all, he didn’t really need to knock on our door at all because I was still wide awake from the night before. The train ride was just as bad as the first one, so neither Ryan or I got a wink of sleep. It was hot, uncomfortable, REALLY bumpy and unbelievably loud. Apparently Egyptian trains just aren’t for us, but at…

Valley of the Kings and Karnak!!

Luxor, Egypt, Africa Today started out with another 6am wakeup call on the boat, but this time we had to be packed up and ready to leave the ship. We headed off the boat at 7am to go to the Valley of the Kings. We arrived to see that loads of tourists were already there and it was hot as hell! We made our way up to the first tomb and learned all about the area we were seeing from…

Edfu to Luxor… God it’s hot!

Edfu to Luxor… God it’s hot!

Edfu, Egypt, Africa This morning started with a 6am wake up call to go see the Temple of Edfu. The interesting thing about this temple is that structurally it is still completely intact. All of the other temples have had parts or most of it missing and is left in ruins. This temple was buried by silt from the Nile River for thousands of years and was perfectly preserved until it was excavated. This meant that we were able to…
