Walking tour of Krakow

Walking tour of Krakow

Krakow, Poland, Europe

I got up this morning and headed out for the walking tour of the old town. There was a big group of 44 people that showed up for the tour, so luckily they split us into two groups. Our tour guide Chris was very good and had a good mixture of facts and jokes. It’s a good way to play a group like this, a little bit for everyone.

We got a beautiful day for the walking tour. It was 28*C (82*F) and sunny. It was actually a little too warm for my taste, but I’m not going to complain. We got a lot of information on how Poland was founded, and then conquered, and made independent, and then conquered again, over and over. We finished up the tour at the castle in town and we all split up. I went down into town and had pizza for lunch, which was a nice change from the local cuisines I’ve been enjoying.

I was planning on joining the next tour at 3pm which was the Jewish tour, but at 2:45pm it started pissing it down and I didn’t feel like walking around in that. Instead, I came back to the hostel and used the time to plan out my next couple of moves. It wasn’t as easy to get tickets from here to Bratislava as I expected, but I eventually figured it out. Between this afternoon and tonight I got my busses booked, and my hostels booked for Bratislava and Vienna. I’m happy that’s done, it was stressing me out a little bit.

I went out tonight just to have some dinner and found a place called Bar Mleczny, which means Milk Bar. This is a small cafeteria place that is left over from the soviet era. You order your food at a counter, and then a few minutes later it comes out of a little window from the kitchen. Nothing fancy at all, but the dumplings were awesome. My buddy Shane told me to try the ones with cabbage in them, but they were not on offer at this milk bar. I decided to have five meat ones and five cheese ones. Good choices, they were awesome.

Tomorrow I’m spending the day out at Auschwitz and Birkenau. I already know it’s not going to be a fun day full of laughs, but I think these kinds of things are really important for us to see. It’s a reminder of just how good we have it these days, and a reminder that these kinds of things can actually still happen. I need a good night sleep before this. It’s going to be a tough day.
