Touristy stuff

Amsterdam, Holland, Europe

Today we woke up to a rainy day for the first time on this holiday. Not bad considering we’d already spent 5 days in Scotland and The Netherlands. We walked around for 30 minutes before finding a place selling crappy umbrellas, so by that point we were soaked and the umbrellas seemed totally pointless. Regardless, we got the umbrellas and waited in line for Anne Frank’s house.

We had to wait for a while, but it was worth it. The house was really interesting and gave a good insight as to what conditions these people had to live in. From there we went for some lunch at an awesome pizza shop and then took a walk through the Red Light District. Apparently not a lot happens during the day, it was very quiet. Because of the weather, we decided to go rest up for the night ahead. We made our way back to the hotel and took some naps.

We went out for dinner to try one of the thousands of Argentinian Steak Houses in Amsterdam. It’s a good thing we did because the steaks were awesome! Now that we were full up from dinner, it was time to try what Amsterdam is known best for. We took a recommendation from Lonely Planet and found the coffee shop called Kadinsky to get a Space Cake. Neither of us had ever had a hash brownie before, so we weren’t really sure what to expect. We asked the bartender and he said that it would probably take about an hour before kicking in, but it’s different for everyone.

We took a walk through the Red Light District again to see if it was much different at night. It was. All of the windows were now occupied by scantily clad women of the night. It was so strange to see them standing there talking to guys, and nobody thinks twice about it. Ryan started to feel the effects of the brownie after about an hour and a half, but I was still waiting. We had a few drinks, but I still got nothing out of the 6 Euro brownie, so we decided to go back and try again.

The second brownie took effect after about an hour and it was very strange. I just got unbelievably tired, so we decided to head back to the hotel around 1:30am. The effects of the brownie made me feel like every 10 seconds I was waking up from a dream, and I wasn’t really sure where I was. It was very strange, because as weird as I felt, I was able to remember everything in the morning.

Well it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting, but I’m glad I did it. When in Rome…
