Rainy Safari Day

Rainy Safari Day

Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa, Africa
Dio Dell Amore Guest House

We got up at stupid o’clock this morning (hopefully for the last time on this trip) for our last safari drive at Pumba. The weather was really miserable, it was cold and rainy, but on the positive side, we were the only two guests on the safari. Justin asked what we wanted to see and of course we said we really want to find the cheetah and buffalo. He did his best to find them, but after 2.5 hours of driving around in the rain, we had no luck. We actually saw very little of anything because of the rain. I guess most of the animals hide in the bushes when it’s raining so they aren’t out in the open for us like they had been the last few days.

We thanked Justin for his work over the last few days and we had our last breakfast at Pumba. We packed up our bags and checked out of Pumba by 11am. This place was absolutely amazing and I would recommend anyone to come here. We loved every minute of it!

We had quite a long drive just to get out of Pumba. We have a crappy little Hyundai i10 and it’s not great on muddy roads. Because of the rain they actually closed the road that we took to get into Pumba, so we had to go a different route. We finally got onto route 1 and drove right past Port Elizabeth again on our way to Jeffrey’s Bay. It took about 2.5 hours to get there and it wasn’t a particularly nice drive. There’s a lot of industry on that route, so not much scenery to look at.

We got to Jeffrey’s Bay and found our guesthouse Dio Dell Amore. It is absolutely stunning. It definitely doesn’t fit in Jeffrey’s Bay, but it is really pretty. It looks like an old Tuscan villa, and the grounds are incredibly well maintained. Inside the hotel is beautiful too. It looks like an old mansion and each of the rooms has a name.

We went for a drive through the town and it is super depressing. Almost all the shops are closed, all the people walking around looked depressed, and it doesn’t look like there is anything to do here. We were hoping to book a surfing class for tomorrow morning, so we found the shop that we had seen online, but they were already closed at 4pm.

We were able to phone the surf guy from our hotel and luckily he answered and has booked us in for a lesson tomorrow morning. We got a recommendation for a place for dinner called Kitchen Windows and made a reservation for tonight. Since we had a couple hours to waste, we decided to watch another movie. We saw Zootopia, but I was very disappointed. It still did the job of passing a couple hours before dinner.

We went out to find Kitchen Windows, and it is right down by the beach. I’m sure there is a really nice view, but since it was dark by the time we got there, we couldn’t see much of anything. The waiter who was absolutely covered in tatoos came to take our order was definitely a surfer dude. We talked to him about what is going on in J Bay and he said everyone is depressed because everyone who lives here is a surfer, and there haven’t been any good waves for a few weeks. I guess that explains it.

The dinner we had at Kitchen Windows was by far the best meal we’ve had in South Africa, and probably in the top ten meals I’ve ever had anywhere in the world. Melissa had a seafood salad and I had a peppercorn steak fillet, and it was out of this world! For dessert we had a cheesecake and a crÎç_e brulee and they were both just ridiculous. I am really surprised that we had such an awesome meal at such a random place, but I couldn’t be happier. That was a great meal, and we are ready for our first ever surf lesson tomorrow morning. This should be pretty exciting!
