Panic, Replanning and NFL Sunday

Puerto Natales, Chile, South America

I woke up at 6am today to try and get in touch with Laura. I had to wait an hour because of course on a Sunday, they start at 10am. I sent her a message and she had just finished reading her email about our cruise being cancelled. That’s why I never heard from G Adventures last night, because they emailed my travel instead so she could break the bad news to me. She was flabbergasted. I talked to her on the phone briefly and she was going to make some calls to figure out what was going on.

She talked to G and found out that the engine on the port side had died and they were trying to get it fixed. They thought it would be fixed in time for our cruise, but now they knew that it wouldn’t be. The would give us a full refund, of course, and then offer a 15% discount if we wanted to do this tour again some other time within the next year. I was pretty surprised at how bad that offer was considering how much time and money I, and other people, had put into this trip. 15% of the cost wouldn’t even be enough to cover the cost of my flight back to Ushuaia from Edinburgh if I decided to go next year. What a horrible deal from G.

Laura went above and beyond and started trawling the internet for other ships that might be going in a few days with some empty spots. She found a few (Tucan, Exodus, and Exodus), but they are all closed on a Sunday, so she is going to have to call them first thing tomorrow morning to find out if there’s any availability. I was looking into flights for Ryan, because G cancelled his flights already, and there are still some available. The only problem is that some of these other cruises leave on Thursday, so Ryan would have to book his flight tomorrow, to leave on Tuesday, to get there for Wednesday, for the ship leaving on Thursday. It’s going to be really tight, but there’s still a possibility this could work.

I spent the entire morning doing research and trying to figure out what I’m going to do if this doesn’t work and Ryan can’t come down. Hopefully I won’t have to use that plan, but I have it just in case. I’m feeling much more optimistic about everything now than I was last night, so fingers crossed that Laura gets some good news in the morning. Ryan and I are going to have to make a quick decision if there is some availability, so we’re trying to consider all our options tonight so we’re ready for tomorrow.

The Patriots played (and crushed) Detroit today at 1pm, so I stuck around the hostel to watch that game and a couple other games in the afternoon. I went out and got some pizza for dinner from Mezita Grande, which was just awesome. I didn’t really get out and do anything today, but it was pretty stressful anyway. Hopefully tomorrow is a little easier on me. I’m getting a bus back to Punta Arenas at 10:45am, but I’m hoping to have a lot more information, and possibly even a solution at that point.
