Moving on to Ilha Grande

Moving on to Ilha Grande

Ilha Grande, Brazil, South America

I got up this morning, got some breakfast and then packed up my stuff. I really enjoyed my time in Paraty, but it was time to move on. I checked out of the hostel at 11:30am and had to wait for the transfer bus to come pick me up. They came at 12:20pm, and I was the last one to get picked up. I paid the R$135 (£35) for the whole transfer from Paraty to Ilha Grande and then to Rio. That’s a great deal. Especially in Brazil where the busses are not always cheap.

I sat next to a really nice Canadian couple from Toronto, Gray and Jovana. We chatted the whole way to Conceicao and that’s where we waited for our boat to bring us to the island. We met another lone traveler while we were waiting named Madalena. She is a Portuguese girl traveling in Brazil for about a month. We had a short boat ride over to the island, only 30-40 minutes and from there we could all walk to our hostels. Gray and Jo are at a nice little pousada on the beach, and I am in a big nasty hostel with no wifi. The really bad thing is that I’m paying almost the same to stay here as I did in my own nice room in Paraty. I guess things just don’t always work out the way you want them to.

I went for a walk around the town, because I really didn’t want to spend any time at my hostel at all. I ran into Gray and Jo having a quick bite to eat at a place called Biergarten. I sat with them for a bit and Madalena wandered by as well. We hung out for a bit and had a short walk through the town and then split up to get ready for the BBQ tonight.

We all met up at Aquario Hostel at 8pm and they were putting on a BBQ. It was R$30 (£7.50) for an all you can eat BBQ, with caipirinhas. I’m not sure how many drinks we were supposed to get, but we each got a couple, and they never said anything. So that’s a great deal! I hung out there until about 10:30pm when the BBQ was turning into more of a disco, and then I took off. I had a nice walk back to the hostel on the beach, but then I showed up at my crappy hostel.

I am in a four bed dorm and by the time I got here at 10:45pm, the other three were already asleep. That’s a little ridiculous. So I am now sitting out in the lobby writing this blog, and then I’m going to have to go into the room and be really really quiet so I don’t wake them up. That’s pretty annoying. I hate staying in dorms! Tomorrow morning I am meeting up with Gray, Jo and Madalena and if the weather is okay, we are going to go on a boat tour of some of the beaches on the island. Fingers crossed for clear skies!
