Excellent day in Tallinn

Tallinn, Estonia, Europe

Today was a really nice day in Tallinn. The first thing I had to do this morning was get all my stuff out of Tallinn Backpackers and move over to United Backpackers. I would have been happy to stay another night at the original hostel, but they were completely booked for tonight, so I had to find an alternative. It turns out United Backpackers is a MUCH nicer hostel than Tallinn Backpackers. It’s a brand new place, that’s huge, with all new amenities, and a really friendly and helpful staff, and it was cheaper! I was pretty happy with the move.

So I dropped off my stuff at United Backpackers and headed into the old town. I met up with a free walking tour with a group of about 50-60 people. I’ve never been on a tour with a group that big before, but it ended up being alright. The tour guide was pretty good, and I met a really nice Canadian girl named Kirstyn. She’s getting her Masters degree right now and it is focused on Estonia, so it was pretty cool to meet someone who was so excited about seeing all that Estonia has to offer.

We grabbed some lunch after the tour at this place that was recommended to me as a place where all the locals eat. I don’t know if it was traditional Estonian food, but if they all eat there, it’s good enough for me. It was a place called Kompressor, and their specialty is pancakes. They were more like crepes as we know them in North America, and they were filled with all sorts of things. I had a mince meat and cheese one (pretty much a cheeseburger in a crepe) and Kirstyn had a pancake filled with salmon and cheese. They were awesome, but so big! We were both completely stuffed after that meal, so it did the trick.

We decided we’d better go for a long walk after eating so much, so we headed up the coast and found the Estonian National History Museum. We couldn’t go inside as it was closed until 6pm (and it was then about 4:30pm), but around the back of the building was a statue graveyard. It was really cool to see where they had pretty much just thrown all of the soviet statues out in the back garden and left them there. They weren’t even standing up, they were just strewn about. We then ended up in this really strange soviet graveyard with monuments that we couldn’t even tell what it was. It wasn’t attractive at all, but still very interesting.

We hopped on a bus back into town and decided to just chill at our hostels for a bit and meet up later. There was a free museum night tonight where you could go in any of the museum in town for free from 6-11pm, but I just wasn’t in a museum mood. Instead I met up with Kirstyn at about 9:30pm, grabbed a snack and a drink and then went to check out the view of the old town from on top of the hill. It was a really nice view with the sun still setting at 11:20pm, and we didn’t hang around for complete darkness to set in. We figured it was probably going to be around 1am before it got completely dark, and then the sun was rising here at 3:42am anyway. Not much night time here in Tallinn. Overall it was a really good day and I’ve enjoyed this city. I’m off to Riga in the morning, and hopefully that can measure up to Tallinn.
