Bus to Berlin

Bus to Berlin

Berlin, Germany, Europe

This morning had quite a slow start, and I was definitely okay with that. I took my time getting out of the hostel, and caught my bus from the main train station in Dresden at 11:30am. I thought about getting all my stuff together to head back into the city this morning before getting my bus, but I was just too tired and didn’t feel like pushing myself. I got the MeinFurn bus to Berlin and it was a decent ride. It wasn’t as nice as the last couple of buses I took, but still decent. It just didn’t have any tv’s or wifi on them, but for a three hour ride, I survived.

My bus arrived at Alexanderplatz in Berlin at about three o’clock and I found my hostel, Pangea People Hostel, without an issue. I checked in to my empty six person dorm and then got ready to head out. I got a message from my friend Paul asking if I was going to watch the Andy Murray vs. Rafael Nadal semifinal match in the French Open. I hadn’t even realised it was on, but I really didn’t want to miss it. I found a sports bar near my hostel called Belushi’s and watched the match there.

It was one of the most atrocious displays I’ve seen from Murray in his career. It was just awful. He lost in straight sets to Nadal, the master on clay. Now I can just pray that Nadal crushed Djockovic on Sunday. One nice thing came out of my time at the pub though. I met two nice Argentinian girls who are travelling around Europe for a month and we were able to exchange travel tips. I will hopefully be able to meet up with Paola when I get to Argentina in December, after my Antarctic cruise.

I also saw another friendly face at Belushi’s when my friend Michael showed up. We met in Israel and then again in Warsaw, and he lives about an hour from Berlin. He was nice enough to come into the city and show me around for the next couple of days. Meeting other travellers is the best! We had a beer at Belushi’s and then headed off into the city. Michael brought me through the east part of the city to where the Berlin Wall used to stand at Brandenburg Gate. We saw a lot of beautiful buildings on the way, and enjoyed the beautiful weather.

We were both pretty hungry and Michael was happy to join me in my travelling tradition of checking out a new Hard Rock Cafe that I’ve not been to before. Even though I’ve been to the HRC in Berlin before, this one relocated in 2010, so I’d not been to the new one. We had a great meal, as usual and enjoyed another couple of German beers from the tap. We finished dinner and had an interesting journey back to the city center.

We got a metro, and the metro station near the HRC was surrounded by drunks and drug users. It was really strange because it looks like a really nice area, and the druggies looked completely out of place. We got into the station and saw a couple of weird looking people there as well, including one of the worst dude-looks-like-a-lady attempts in history. Trust me, dude looked like a dude. Michael and I split up at Alexanderplatz and we’ll meet up again tomorrow. It was really nice to chill with a friend instead of another dinner at HRC on my own. I definitely think that meeting people on the road is the number one perk of travelling.
