Bus ride and night in Cusco

Cusco, Peru, South America

The bus ride last night was very comfortable, but the ride was so windy and curvy that I was hardly able to get any sleep. Luckily my seat had an electric port so I was able to use my laptop for the whole ride and finished watching season four of the Walking Dead. At least that helped pass the time. We were supposed to arrive in Cusco at 12:30pm, but at that point we were stopped on the road for what ended up being two hours. I think it was due to construction, but it’s really tough to say.

When the bus stopped, they turned it off so there was no A/C. It was absolutely roasting on the bus so I stood outside with Karin and tried to stay in the little shade that there was. It was amazing to me how we were stopped in the middle of nowhere, but tons of people showed up selling things on the side of the road. I don’t know how they got there, but you could buy sodas, cooked meals, and even ice cream. Karin and I were convinced this stop in the road was just to help out the local economy by letting them sell stuff to people who wouldn’t normally stop.

We finally got into Cusco at 3:30pm and we got a cab into the city. I checked into Estrella Backpackers Hostel and it’s not quite as nice as it looks on booking.com, but it will do the trick for the next few days. I have a huge room to myself with three twin beds, so that’s fine by me. I went to the office for Lorenzo’s Expeditions, my tour company, to pick up the letter that was sent to me by my friend Jo in Scotland. Unfortunately, it never came. I even went down to the post office to see if they had it, but they didn’t. I’m just going to have to hope that it got delayed at customs or something and it will be here by the time I get back from Machu Picchu. Who knew that you couldn’t rely on the Peruvian mail service??

I found out about a free walking tour in Cusco so I’m going to meet up with Karin in the morning and we’re going to check that out. It looks like Cusco is a nice little town, so I’m looking forward to seeing a bit more of it. It also just started raining here and it’s the biggest downpour I have seen/heard since I got to South America. Fingers crossed that it isn’t doing that tomorrow.
