Bus from Lima to Nazca

Bus from Lima to Nazca

Nasca, Peru, South America

I got up at 5am today to get packed up for my bus ride. I got a taxi from the Gran Hotel and made it to the bus terminal for about 6:30am. I grabbed a bite to eat and then got settled into my bus for the next nine hours. It was only meant to be 7.5 hours, but we came across a pretty bad accident on the road to Nazca and that held us up for a while. It looked to be a water truck that had flipped over onto its side and spilled a bunch of water out onto the road. I’m not sure what people were doing with it, but they were all getting buckets and filling them with water. I can’t imagine they were drinking it, but I don’t know what else you would do with a bucket full of water on the side of a road in the desert.

I arrived in Nazca at about 5pm and the owner of the hostel, Jose, was there to meet me. It was the fist time that I’ve had a hostel owner pick me up from a bus station. It wasn’t even something I had to pay for, it’s just part of the deal at this hostel. It’s a nice touch. So he picked me up in his crappy old station wagon and we drove about three minutes to get to Hostal Boulevard, which is on the main street in Nazca. It would have been really easy to find on my own, but maybe has problems with people getting screwed over by taxi companies or something.

Jose and the rest of the people at the hostel seem really nice and he helped me get a flight booked for tomorrow morning so I can see the Nazca Lines properly. It was a little more money than I expected it to cost ($100), but I’ll probably never be back here again, so I just went for it. There was a cheaper option in a bigger plane (20 seater), but you aren’t even guaranteed to get a window seat. I picked the smaller plane (8 seater) where I am guaranteed a window, and we fly at a much lower altitude so we’ll have a better view of the lines. It should be good.

I went out for dinner at a restaurant near the hostel called Mamashana. It was excellent! It was a little more expensive than some of the other places around, but this was a proper nice restaurant. I had the aji de gallina, which is shredded chicken with potatoes in a creamy sauce, with a side of rice. It was delicious! This was the dish that Madeleine had in Lima the other night and I was really jealous, so I had to try it for myself. I was not disappointed.

I had a short walk down the main street to find some dessert and there was a guy selling churros from a stand. I had some with caramel sauce, and they were amazing. And not a bad price either ($0.30). I’m going to have a relatively early night tonight because I have my flight in the morning. I’m really looking forward to that!
