First day in Santiago with Melissa

First day in Santiago with Melissa

Santiago, Chile, South America I had an awesome first day with Melissa in Santiago today! I was able to sleep for almost the entire flight from Easter Island, which really impressed me. I got into Santiago a little after 5am, and got my bag without a problem. Melissa’s flight was supposed to arrive at 6:18am, but it was delayed about 25 minutes. I had plenty of time to find the international arrivals area and was waiting for her when she…

Last day on Easter Island

Last day on Easter Island

Hanga Roa, Chile, South America I had a really nice, relaxing last day on the island. I returned the car at about 9am, after filling it up with gas that only cost 8,000 pesos ($15). I thought it was going to be a lot more expensive than that for filling it up on the island. I met Andrea at 9:15am and we walked over to the last cave we wanted to see. It was at the base of Orongo, and…

Quarry, Volcano hike, and more caves

Quarry, Volcano hike, and more caves

Hanga Roa, Chile, South America I had another really good day on the island today. I picked up my rental car from Insular Rentals, and they were awesome. The woman let me come at 8:30am instead of their normal 9am opening time. We went through the paperwork and I got the car at 8:45am and hit the road. I really wanted to get to the quarry (Rano Raraku) when it opened at 9am, but I didn’t get there until 9:15am….

Diving again, caves, and car adventures

Diving again, caves, and car adventures

Hanga Roa, Chile, South America I had another really good day with Rey and Andrea today. We met for our dive at 9am, and it was my least favorite dive of the three, but still pretty awesome. We went to a site called La Catedral and we had a bigger group today of five divers and the two dive masters. There was also another dive company at the same site when we arrived, so the water was pretty busy. This…

Diving and Anakena Beach

Diving and Anakena Beach

Hanga Roa, Chile, South America I had an awesome day today! It started out with a small breakfast at the hostel, and then my first dive at 9am. I went down to Mike Rapa Diving and met the other people I would be diving with. There was a really nice American guy named Rey, and a Brazilian girl named Andrea in my group. We are all traveling on our own, and all speak english, so it was perfect. Our first…

Hike to Orongo and Vinapu

Hike to Orongo and Vinapu

Hanga Roa, Chile, South America I had a great first day on the island today! The weather didn’t quite agree with me the whole time, but for the first half of the day it was glorious! I got a really good night’s sleep at the hostel last night, and had a good breakfast to start off the day. Nothing special, but a couple of rolls with cheese and jam, with some coffee or tea. Not bad for a free breakfast….

I’M ON EASTER ISLAND!!!

I’M ON EASTER ISLAND!!!

Hanga Roa, Chile, South America I am on Easter Island!!! This is one of the most remote islands in the whole world. I can’t believe I’ve actually made it here. It’s awesome! My day started out with an early wake up call at the hostel, and my taxi driver actually showed up 15 minutes early. This never happens in South America. He was a great driver named Johnny, and it turns out he lived in Canada for a long time,…

Bus ride to Santiago

Bus ride to Santiago

Santiago, Chile, South America I had a pretty decent sleep last night, so I felt good this morning. I had a good breakfast at the hostel, and headed off at 9am to the bus terminal. I really enjoyed my stay at Hostal El Arbol. It was like staying at a grandma’s house. The owner was so friendly and took care of all of us so well. It was really nice. I got my bus at 10am, and it was really…

Day in La Serena

Day in La Serena

La Serena, Chile, South America I got into La Serena at about 6:15am, and I think I managed to get 2-3 hours of sleep last night. That’s not bad for me on a night bus. My hostel was only a ten minute walk from the bus station, and it looked like a pretty good neighborhood when we were coming in on the bus, so I just walked it. It sounds so obvious that I would walk that distance, but in…

Travel day to the south

Travel day to the south

La Serena, Chile, South America Today was strictly a travel day. I got up this morning, had a good breakfast at my hostel and got myself organized for the 17 hour bus ride that I’m currently on. I found out last night about a boat that goes through southern Chile (from my friend/travel agent Laura), so I spent the morning doing a bit of research to see when the boat leaves, and how much it would cost. There is a…
