To the middle of the world

To the middle of the world

Quito, Ecuador, South America

I went to the middle of the world today. I got a couple of local busses, one to the terminal Ofelia ($0.25), and then another one to Mitad del Mundo ($0.15). It took a total of about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there, and I was starving. I grabbed some lunch when I first got there, and then made my way into the park. It cost $3 to get in, and it wasn’t quite as impressive as I expected it to be.

There were a lot of restaurants and shops inside, all leading to the monument marking latitude 0 0′ 0″. It was pretty cool to be there, but the museums they had set up around the monument were less than impressive, and the view from the top of the monument was disappointing as well.

I also wasn’t in the best mood to walk around and see a sight because I got some really disappointing news this morning. I found out today that Melissa is no longer coming to Machu Picchu with me. I had really been looking forward to checking out such an unbelievable place with a good friend with me, but now that’s not going to happen. It was something I had gotten so excited about in the last couple of weeks, so I was bummed to find out I’m now going on my own. I’m sure it’ll still be awesome, but it would have been better to have someone there to experience it with.

I got the local busses back into the city, and then checked out a little bit of the old town. I didn’t really feel like sight seeing anymore, so I went out and grabbed a bite to eat for dinner, and then just came back to the hostel. I have a walking tour set up tomorrow morning, so I’m looking forward to checking out the old town in Quito. It’s supposed to be really nice.
