To the coast! San Sebastian first

San Sebastian, Spain, Europe

Today ended up being mostly a travel day, but it was nice anyway. I was hoping there was going to be an early bus to get from Barcelona to San Sebastian, but the earliest I could find was 10:30am. I got on that and was lucky enough to sit next to a lovely Spanish girl named Elia. She seemed more than happy to practice her english (lucky for me, because my Spanish is non-existent) and we chatted for a good chunk of the four hour ride to Zaragoza. I had to switch busses there and that was Elia’s destination, so I said bye and waited for my bus connection to San Sebastian.

I didn’t have anyone next to me on the next ride, which was another three hours, so I was able to spread out and relax. I didn’t sleep too well at the hostel last night, so I’ve been pretty tired all day. It was raining for most of the ride up to San Sebastian, but fortunately it stopped as soon as the bus pulled into the station. The directions for the hostel recommended that I get the bus closer to the old town, but I decided to walk and I’m glad I did. It was a pretty nice walk through the new town and then into the old town, but it was a good chance for me to see some of the city.

So far, San Sebastian seems like a really nice city. I checked into my hostel, dropped off my bags and then headed straight out to get something to eat. I hadn’t eaten all day and I was craving a pizza so I found a pizzeria (which is always easy), and had a nice big pizza all to myself. It was exactly what I wanted. I left the restaurant and was going to walk around the city for a bit, but my camera battery was completely dead, and I wasn’t feeling too lively either. I came back to the hostel around 8:30pm and I’ve been trying to figure out where to go in the next few days.

The hostel, unsurprisingly, is filled with Aussies, so I’m not sure I’m going to get a lot of sleep tonight. It’s funny how different hostels have become in the last month. When I was travelling around in low season I hardly ever ran into people who were travelling around just to get drunk every night. Now that it’s high season, and college kids are out “exploring” the world, it seems like every night is Saturday night. Hopefully I can get some sleep tonight, but I’m already thinking about booking a single room for when I get to Bilbao just so I know I’ll get a good night’s rest.
