Walking tour of Riga

Walking tour of Riga

Riga, Latvia, Europe

Today was a really nice day in Riga. It was a horrible night sleep at the hostel, so I was up really early this morning. Last night was really hot, with no air conditioning in the room, and we left the window open to try and get some cool air in, but there was no air movement in the room, and a lot of noise from the street coming in. My pillow was also the worst thing I’ve ever had to sleep on, it was like a bag of plums. All this meant that I got virtually no sleep, and was up at 7am. I hung out at the hostel, had breakfast and chilled until about 11:30am when Hannah and I headed out to catch the free walking tour.

The walking tour was good and bad. It was good in the sense that most of it was outside of the old town, so we got to see more of Riga than expected. It was bad in the sense that the tour guide was a bit of a jackass, so I found it annoying listening to him for 2.5 hours. We got to see the Moscow quarter, a lot of art nouveau style buildings, and a few parks. It was a nice way to get out in the beautiful sunshine and see the city. We finished the tour and grabbed lunch with an American couple from our tour.

After the lunch, Hannah and I checked out the Central Market and picked up something for breakfast tomorrow. We came back to the hostel and chilled for a bit as I was exhausted and needed a rest. We went back out around 7pm for our last walk through the old town to see the statue of Saint Christopher (the patron saint of travelers), and to get some dinner. Hannah was a great travel partner for the last couple of days because we both wanted to base our days around what we could eat. It was perfect.

We ate at a place called Street Burgers and it really was one of the best burgers I’ve had in a while. We walked through the old town (slowly) to try and let our gigantic dinners digest a bit before coming back to the hostel. We’re both getting the bus to Vilnius, Lithuania at 8:30am, so we’ve gotten our stuff all packed up and we’re ready to go. Riga has been really nice, but it’s quite small, so I’m ready to move on.
