Verona for the last day

Verona for the last day

Verona, Italy, Europe

Today was the last day of our trip, and it cemented the fact that I absolutely love Italy. We woke up, packed up our stuff, and headed out of Lady Capulet Apartments by about 10am. We left our bags at reception, picked up our free rental bikes from the apartment, and headed into the city to explore.

We first headed to the furthest church from the city center called San Zeno church, and found that this is a pretty easy city to ride your bike around. I am always dubious because I’ve seen how much people struggle in Boston and Edinburgh, but this town is made for riding a bike in. We took an audio guided tour of the church, which was very cool. I don’t generally take tours of churches, I just go in and take a look around myself, but this tour was really interesting.

We left the church and found a little pizzeria nearby to grab some lunch. We had a couple of pizzas at Pizzeria San Zeno, which was very affordable considering it was right on the main square in front of the church. I suppose it is a bit further away than some of the other main tourist attractions though, so maybe it doesn’t get as busy down there. It was some really good pizza. We finished up there, hopped on our bikes and headed back to the main center so we could see some more sights before leaving.

We visited Castlevecchio, which we took a tour of, and it was also very cool. There was a lot of art inside, so Melissa was really into that. I was more of a fan of getting up to the top of the castle and seeing the view from the walkways. Verona is a really beautiful city.

We left the castle and took our bikes down to the arena, which is just a miniature coliseum. It’s pretty cool to see something like that so intact in the middle of this city. We locked our bikes up there, got some gelato, and sat on the steps of the Palazzo Barbieri to enjoy it and people watch. We brought our bikes back to the apartment and left them there and also grabbed our jackets because it got a lot cooler than we were expecting it to.

We walked up to Juliet’s balcony, because of course we couldn’t come to Verona and not see that. It was a nice looking balcony in front of a little courtyard which was absolutely packed full of tourists. Also, most of the walls are covered with chewed gum, so that’s disgusting. I guess it became a thing to do where people would stick love notes to the wall for Juliet so they would come true. They started using gum to stick the notes up with, and some people now are even putting up Band-Aids, so that’s even nastier. I hope they weren’t used like the gum was…

We checked out a few other places in town like Piazza Erbe, Piazza Signori, and a couple other churches. It was a really nice chill day, and at 5pm we had to get going. We went back to the apartment, grabbed the bags, packed up the car, and headed back to Bologna. We originally were hoping that we would have some more time to check out Lake Garda or some other places, but we just liked Verona so much that we didn’t want to leave. The only thing we had to say about Verona is it didn’t quite have the charm that some other old towns have like San Marino and Ravenna.

We got back to the airport on time, returned the car and are waiting for our flight back to Edinburgh now. I’ve found out that I don’t need to work tomorrow, so that’s a bonus. It’s going to be a long day for Melissa though. After such an awesome birthday trip, it’s going to be tough to get back to the real world. Lucky for me, I am off for the United States in two days 🙂
