UCONN wins! Then a boring day in Amman

Amman, Jordan, Asia

I got up at 4am today to watch the NCAA National Championship game. It might sound ridiculous to get up that early, but UCONN was playing Kentucky and there was no way I was going to miss that! It ended up being well worth it too when UCONN won their fourth championship in 15 years! What a great start to the day!!

After all that excitement, I packed up my stuff, grabbed a quick bite to eat and then headed off to Amman. The driver for the hotel in Wadi Musa had to make a trip to the airport near Amman anyway, so we agreed that I would give him 25 dinar to get to my next hotel in Amman. It was a good deal for me, and a little extra pocket money for the driver, Husain. It was about a 2.5 hour drive up there, without much to see in between, but that was to be expected.

I got to the Boutique Hotel Amman by about 11am and checked in. It looks like everything I have heard about Amman is true. It’s a big, dirty city, and there’s not all that much to see. I drove past the only two sites I was told about on the way in, and they don’t look like anything special. I met a nice American woman who is travelling around Jordan on her own, so we chatted for a while before she headed off to the Dead Sea for the afternoon.

I walked around Amman for about an hour today, just trying to get a feel for the city, and it doesn’t seem to be anything special. I’m leaving the Citadel and Amphitheatre until tomorrow, so I had a pretty relaxed day. I spent a bit of time looking into where I might go after Turkey, but I think I’m going to play it by ear. I’ll most likely end up going to Greece, but we’ll see what happens.

I went out for dinner to a restaurant next to my hotel and got a margarita pizza. It might sound boring, but after a couple weeks of shewarma, kebabs, and humus, it was really nice to have something a bit different. My hotel room is pretty crappy, especially considering it was sold as a “Deluxe Single with a mountain view”, but it’ll do for a couple of nights. It doesn’t have air conditioning, but at least it has wifi. It could definitely be worse!
