Southernmost Point of Africa and a Beautiful Sunset

Gansbaai, South Africa, Africa
White Shark Guest House

We got up this morning and had a lovely breakfast at Cypress Cottage before hitting the road. We drove south for about an hour to get to the southernmost point in Africa. A lot of people think that the tip of the peninsula near Cape Town is the southernmost point, but they are very wrong. That is the most southwestern point. But when we got down to Cape Agulhas, we could actually see where the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean come together. I was hoping there was going to be a drastic color difference in the water, but there wasn’t. There is a really nice wooden walkway that goes from the lighthouse, down to the water’s edge and along the coast. We walked the length of the walkway and had our picture taken at the monument signifying the southernmost point.

We drove west from here through a pretty little town called Elim, towards Gansbaai. Elim had rows have colorful little houses that were really picturesque. We drove past a lot of farms which raise a lot of the animals for the private game reserves. We didn’t get to see too many animals, but it was interesting to see that they have to farm for these animals. I guess it’s better than pulling them all out of their natural habitats and confining them.

We arrived at White Shark Guest House (yup, that’s right) and it is beautiful. It’s a really modern house and the owner Renee couldn’t be nicer. We went across the street to Great White House for a late lunch. I was happy to see they had bobotie for a main course and it was fantastic. I love that it comes with a side of sliced bananas, rice, and apricot chutney. I’m not sure if there is a correct way of eating it, but I just kind of throw it all in the bowl together and it is delicious.

Renee recommended that we go to a town called De Kelders which is just a ten minute drive from Gansbaai, so we took her advice. It was a really beautiful shoreline and we found a little bench to sit on and watch an absolutely stunning sunset. We have been so lucky with the weather on this trip! It’s not something that I’m really conscious of, but now that I think back on this trip, we have had perfect weather, except for that one rain storm at Tsitsikamma, but that just added to the adventure.

We felt like having a little something sweet for dessert so we went back to Great White house for dessert before coming back to the guesthouse. We have an early rise tomorrow so we’re going to try to get to bed early, but the excitement of our shark cage dive tomorrow morning might be too much to let me sleep!
