Sightseeing in Sofia

Sofia, Bulgaria, Europe

Today was a very nice day in Sofia, helped by two very nice Dutch ladies. I started out by packing up my stuff and getting the heck out of Guest Rooms Kom. It was not a very nice place to stay, and I found a proper hostel for tonight, so I moved down there. I had arranged to meet up with Jacquelien and her mom Dineke after dropping my stuff off at the hostel. I got to my hostel at about 9:15am and found out that they are not open until noon. There was no one even there to take my bags for the day. It was just a locked door. Useless. Luckily the Dutch ladies were nice enough to let me leave my bags in their hotel for the day while we went out sightseeing.

Their hotel was right around the corner from my new hostel so I met up with them, dropped off my bags and we headed out. I wouldn’t say that Sofia is a very beautiful city overall, but there are a couple of gems. We saw all the sights that the city has to offer including the National Theatre, Alexander Nevski Cathedral, and that’s pretty much it. There’s not a whole lot of places to see here as a tourist but we tried to make the best of it.

We stopped for drinks a couple of times and had a nice long lunch at Happy Grill. We lucked out with the weather and had sunshine for most of the day. It was a really nice day with Jacquelien and Dineke. I now have some new people to visit in Holland if I get there on this trip. We finished off the day with a nice indian dinner at the Taj Mahal (of course), and then I picked up my bags from their hotel.

I checked into my new place, Elegance Hostel, and while I wouldn’t call it elegant, it is definitely better than last night’s place! I am in a ten person dorm, but there are only four of us. It’s a pretty eclectic group too. There’s a French girl (Melodie), a Turkish guy (Adem) and a Japanese girl (Rumi). The three of them have gone out to enjoy the Sofia nightlife and I am happy to sit here and watch the Red Sox beat the Blue Jays and the Bruins are trying to finish off the first playoff series against Detroit. I’m heading out to Skopje, Macedonia tomorrow and really have no idea what to expect…again.
