Rainy day, great night!

Shanghai, China, Asia

I had a great night’s sleep last night! It was such a good night actually that I woke up at 6am and was completely rested. It was a great feeling that I haven’t had in quite some time. It was a perfect time of the day to catch up with the family back home so I made some calls and organized my hostel for the next couple of nights in Hangzhou. Initially I was going to go there for three nights, but I like Shanghai so much that I’m spending an extra night here and I’ll just be in Hangzhou for two nights.

I was all ready to get up and head out for the day in Shanghai, until I went downstairs for breakfast. Since my room upstairs doesn’t have an outside window, I hadn’t noticed that it was pouring rain outside. I checked the forecast and it was going to rain all day. There’s not much to do when it’s pouring like that, so I just hung out for most of the day. I went out to buy a pair of trousers in the city, because I only have one pair, and they are zip-offs. I figured if I was going out with some people tonight I should have a real pair of pants on. Also, it’s getting noticeably colder the further north I go (duh!), so I’m noticing the need for warmer clothes more and more.

I met Joey and his friends Vinny (US), Daniel (Brazil), Lilian (Brazil) and Naomi (Italy) at a nice burger restaurant called Blue Frog. It was a really nice place and quite expensive, so I was happy to find out that on Mondays they have a deal for half priced burgers and beers. It was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had. It reminded me of a Wannaburger in Edinburgh because it was at least eight inches tall when they gave it to me. I was informed that I wasn’t allowed to use a fork and knife so it got messy really quickly. It was awesome though, and the curly fries on the side were a nice reminder of home too.

We went out to a bar after dinner called Perry’s and it was a very cool little place. It was a college bar, that felt like a hostel bar too. There was writing all over the walls, the people working in there looked like travelers, and it was cheap as anything! I had a bucket of whisky and coke (like an ice bucket in a hotel room) for 25 yuan ($4). It was crazy! The rest of the group shared a massive three liter beer and a hookah pipe. It was a fun night and really nice to be able to chat with people for once.

I’m back at the hostel now and it’s just after midnight. I’m really tired because I’ve been up since 6am, but it’s a much better kind of tired than I felt last night. I’m off to Hangzhou tomorrow, but I’ve decided that I want an extra night in Shanghai instead of in Hangzhou, so I’ll just be going for one night. The whole gang tonight said that one night is enough, so I’m taking their word for it.
