Prague city tour and then Dresden

Dresden, Germany, Europe

I did get lucky with the weather again today. I’ve been on a pretty good little run lately in that department. I checked out of my hostel at 10am and headed into the city to partake in another free walking tour. This one was with the company called New Europe and it was by far the best tour I’ve taken so far. The guide, Karel, was very interesting, very enthusiastic, and very fun. That combo makes for a great tour guide. Even though I’ve been to this city before, I thought it would be a good idea to see a different side of Prague and learn a little bit about the history of the city. I’m really glad I did.

I stayed with the group through lunch, where I had a traditional goulash and dumplings with a beer. I then had to leave the group early and head back to my hostel to get my backpack. I went down to the bus station and found my next bus to Dresden. It was with the same Student Agency company that I used from Salzburg, and again they were great. This was a short two hour ride to Dresden, and then I found my hostel just a few hundred meters from the bus station.

I’m at another A&O Hostel, which is the same company I stayed with in Vienna. I like this place so far. The guy who checked me in actually remembered me from the Vienna hostel because he was working there when I was there. I had booked a six person dorm and he put me in one on my own, which is always nice. He also gave me the sheets and towel for free, which was meant to cost an extra €4. Every little bit helps!

I dropped off my stuff in the room and then headed out to see what Dresden looks like. Everyone who knows me knows just how much I hate to shop, but I actually love Dresden for the shopping! For the last couple of weeks I’ve been keeping a list of some things I’ve wanted to pick up, and I just haven’t been able to find them. They are just stupid things, but for some reason are really difficult to locate. I found all of them here. And I thought it was funny that I was able to find a couple of the things (waterproof jacket and European USB charger) at my favourite store in the world, TK Maxx. Brilliant.

So after getting my shopping out of the way, I walked through the old town and got some dinner. It’s a really nice little city, right on the Elbe River. There are some big beautiful buildings and churches in the center, and it has a nice vibe. I didn’t spend all that much time in the city because it’s just not that big, but I’m glad I stopped here for a night. It’s a nice little place. Tomorrow I am moving on again, and this time to a much bigger city, Berlin!
