Last day in Brussels

Brussels, Belgium, Europe

I had a really nice day with Pete and Therese today. We got up pretty late after such a late night, so I think it was around 10:30am when we finally got up. Pete went out to do some shopping and made us pancakes and bacon, and got some croissants and juice. It was the best breakfast I’ve had in a long long time. I can’t even remember the last time I had a pancake, but it was delicious.

We took a wander down to a huge flea market in the middle of a square. It was cool to walk around and see some nice stuff, but also to see just how much crap people were selling, and I assume some people were even buying it. We walked over to Place Jourdan to have some Belgian frites with mayonnaise, and Pete’s favourite beer, Orval. It was excellent! We then went up to the European Parliament and explored the Parliamentarium for a little while. It’s a really good interactive museum where you can learn about how the EU government works. It’s also a pretty cool looking building.

We walked back through town and arrived back at their flat around 6pm. I had to just grab my stuff, thank them for everything, and then head off to the bus station. The bus station is at the North Train station, which is a really sketchy area. It’s littered with homeless people, and it just doesn’t feel like a safe place to be hanging out for a minute longer than necessary. I’m on the bus now, which is completely full and preparing for my 12-hour ride to Lyon. Since the car rental thing fell apart, I don’t really know what I’m doing to do from there. I think I might skip Switzerland and explore southern France and then go straight to Spain. I just don’t want to try to squeeze in too many things in such a short time.
