Great day in Skopje

Skopje, Macedonia, Europe

I had a really nice day in Skopje. It was raining first thing this morning, but I didn’t let that deter me. I left Pansion Bianco and went to their sister hotel in the city center to have breakfast. It was probably the most complete breakfast I’ve had in a month. It was a cheese omelet (with cheddar and feta), bread, salad, and juice. I decided to first explore the Turkish part of the city and just walked around for a while checking out the little shops and markets. I was surprised to see how many wedding dress shops there were. I never saw that many in Turkey, but for some reason in the Turkish quarter of Skopje, they loved them.

From there I headed up to Kale Fortress. It’s an old fort in the north side of the city across the river. It wasn’t quite as good as I was hoping. There is no information at all, so I have no idea when it was built or for what reason. Also, all the gates were locked, so there were quite a few places I could not go. It was a decent view of the city, even though the weather wasn’t very nice.

The city is full of statues and artwork. I’ve been told that they were all put up in the last couple of years to try and make the city more interesting to tourists. I think it will work because I thought the city was great. It even has red double decker busses, which I assume were another way to try to make it touristy.

I spent the rest of the day walking around the city, and then chilled at the hotel for a couple hours in the afternoon. The weather cleared up in the afternoon, so I got to see the city in the sun and it is a really nice place. Unfortunately, in the evening, the rain started again. I went back out to take some pictures at night, and it looks great at night as well. Unfortunately, the rain persisted the whole time I was out, so the pictures weren’t as good as I was hoping.

I think I might have changed my plan going forward too. I was going to go north to Serbia, but I think I might go to Kosovo for a night, then Montenegro, and then Serbia. I think that makes more sense logically. We’ll see what happens tomorrow.
