First day in Arequipa

First day in Arequipa

Arequipa, Peru, South America

I woke up this morning at 5am on the bus and realized that we were almost in Arequipa already. This bus must have been flying! I got to the Terminal at 5:30am and hopped in a taxi to go to my hostel. Even though I arrived there at 5:45am, they let me into my room and I was able to take a nap for a couple of hours. The hostel (Hostal Roma Continental) is pretty bad. It’s only $7 a night for a single room, and it’s in a great location, so I really shouldn’t have expected too much from it. It’s pretty dirty, the wifi is bad, and it’s just not a very welcoming place. It doesn’t really matter for a couple of nights, it’ll do the job.

I went out for a free walking tour at 10:30am, and it was a pretty poor tour. The guide was really boring, and his english wasn’t very good at all. There were only six of us on the tour, and we all seemed to find it pretty boring. It finished around 1:30pm and I left immediately to go get some lunch. After that I was pretty tired so went back to the hostel and rested for a bit. I went back out around 4pm to get my hair cut, and then to find a tour for tomorrow.

I was really happy with my hair cut, which is a nice change from the last couple of cuts I’ve had. And I think I found a perfect tour for tomorrow as well. The most important things to see here are Colca Canyon, and to see condors in the wild. I found a tour that brings us to Colca Canyon and to the Cross of the Condors. It’s a little expensive (130 soles, $43), but it sounds like it’ll be worth it. The only bad thing is that I have to wake up at 2:45am for my 3am pickup in the morning. I was hoping for a day I can sleep late, but that’s not going to happen! Oh well.
