Day walking around Puerto Natales

Puerto Natales, Chile, South America

I had a pretty quiet day in Puerto Natales today, which was fine considering how bad the weather was. I spent a few hours walking around the town to check out the port and whatever scenery there was. It was a lot colder than yesterday, probably around 5*C (40*F), and it was raining, and the wind was blowing. Not exactly a nice day to be outside sightseeing, but fortunately for me, there isn’t a lot to see in PN. The backdrop to the town is really nice, with some snow capped mountains in the distance, but that’s about it.

I found an awesome pizza place for lunch called Mezita Grande, and had an excellent mustard chicken pizza. I could only eat half of it, but that worked out just fine because it meant that I didn’t need to go out anywhere for dinner tonight.

After lunch I wanted to go shopping to pick up stuff for Antarctica, and Lonely Planet said that PN is the Gortex capital of Patagonia. Lies. There are two shops that sell outdoor gear here, and they are tiny. I’m not going to find anything here. I was able to get a tour booked for tomorrow though, so I’ll be on a full day bus tour of Torres Del Paine National Park. I don’t have the time (or the desire right now) to go on a four day hike and camp by myself, so this seems like the next best way to see the park. On Sunday I might do a boat trip up to a glacier, but I’m not really sure if it’s worth it considering how much I am going to see in Antarctica. I’ll have to cross that bridge when I get to it.

I had my leftover pizza at the hostel for dinner, and met a really nice French couple in the kitchen. I sat with them for over an hour and enjoyed a nice beer with them while talking about all of our travels. I love that part of traveling. It’s so fun meeting other people and learning their stories. Tonight is an early night for me though. Big day of touring tomorrow!
