A day at Uluru

A day at Uluru

Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Australia, Australia

I had a pretty miserable night of sleep considering I was in a room with almost 20 people in it. It seemed that there was always someone on their phone, or on their computer, or coming in and out of the door. It was a little ridiculous, especially how little respect people had for others in the room. Ah well, I guess that’s what travelling is all about.

I got over to Uluru at 9:45am so I could go on the Ranger guided tour at 10am. I figured I might as well find out what this rock is all about, and I’m glad I did. It was a really interesting tour along the Mala walking trail. We learned about the Aboriginal and English history of the site and a few of the stories to go along with it.

I’ve read a few books and guides on DSLR photography now that I’ve gotten my new camera, and one thing that they all say is that lighting is a photographer’s best friend. Well apparently light has a BIG problem with me because the lighting couldn’t have been flatter today. The rain held off, but there was absolutely no sun at all, so it made for another mediocre picture day. After the two hour tour I walked around the base walk to see what I missed yesterday.

There weren’t any waterfalls today as they dry out so quickly after the rain stops. I can’t help but think how amazing this place must look in the sunshine. After about 6 hours of walking around Uluru and snapping far too many pictures, I headed back to the hostel. I met my new roommate for the night, Jason Chang from San Francisco. This kid’s wicked smaht! Some sort of geo-physicist from Berkley and going to Stanford for his post grad. Yeah, uber smart, and a pretty cool kid as well. So we hung out tonight at the hostel but there’s not much going on here again tonight, so it’ll probably be another early night. We’re going to get up at 6am and hopefully see a sunrise, if weather permits!

I’ve decided that I’m going to stay here tomorrow night as well so I’ll have all day tomorrow to see Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). It’s another part of this national park that is supposed to be stunning as well, so we’ll see. The forecast shows this it should be clearing up tonight and maybe tomorrow I will get a glimpse of a sunrise or sunset. That would be awesome, but I’m not holding my breath!
